This is why kids act up

Have you seen the news today? If not, this was a highlight from this morning's news:




This is the summary of what happened-
"The brawl broke out during a game between the Butler Bulldogs and the East Mecklenburg Eagles when a Butler player's father started arguing with a school resource officer on January 28, 2011."

Maybe, just maybe, if the adults in our society actually ACTED with the maturity that adults are expected to behave, our children would not run around with such utter disrespect- not only for each other but for adults and other authority figures in their lives. It's behavior like this, I believe, is why children run around acting like the world owes them something and they end up never truly contributing anything positive to their environment. So sad.
Even worse? This happened in my state. How embarrassing!

Christmas play: Hannah's singing debut

Hannah was SO excited to be chosen as one to sing a special in the Christmas play. As mentioned in Jackson's post, the family was snowed in at a motel, and their Christmas presents had been stolen. The conversation at this point in the play was the four children thinking about everything they were missing not being at grandma's for Christmas.

Hannah is on the left side. At a couple of points in the song she looked at us and was trying VERY hard not to smile because they were supposed to be grumpy and have an attitude. (Actually, the cutie on the right told her mom she was "saving" her attitude for the play, it worked!) All three of them done SO GOOD!

Christmas play: Jackson's acting debut

The storyline for our Christmas play was a family who were travelling to grandma's, got snowed in at the motel they stopped at for the night. Jackson was one of the theives that broke in their van to steal the family's presents, setting the stage for the whole show :) Jackson was the one who dropped a present on the way out, fulfilling the "bumbling robber" role.

This is the three year old class I teach every Sunday. They are so sweet, and we've worked so hard on our songs in the past few months! Especially my "partner in crime" who worked with them each week. The twos are on the right side of the stage, threes are the left.

Braden and bubbles

We got Braden a Winnie The Pooh bubble wand for his birthday. That thing is HUGE. I want one! It is one of those things where you wouldn't pay for your own kids to have one, but because it's a gift, the price is justified. Am I the only one that thinks like that? (I hope not!) He LOVED his bubbles. I knew he would. Because I'm the "cool" aunt and cool aunts get the best stuff for birthdays, right? Ok, that's what I tell myself at least. I mentioned before loving to hear him talk. We don't get to spend much time with him anymore and weren't around really when he started talking in sentences and so forth, so I really enjoyed this. Three year old giggles are so adorable!!

Timothy dreaming

We have an over sized chair we got from freecycle. It's so over sized, we've discussed a number of times how out of place it looks in the living room, and it's too big to fit through the kid's bedroom doors, and too big for our bedroom. When we start redecorating ... or decorating, should I say, we'll eventually get rid of it. But it's so comfortable. VERY comfortable. But it's an eyesore now. Why? Cause it's the cats' chair. (Translate: picked to death from claws) Both of them, but mainly Timothy. That's where you'll find him. It's not uncommon to see him on one arm and Titus on another. This chair sits beside Jay's recliner, where I like to do my bible reading in the morning. I caught this video on one of our recently quiet, calm mornings. It was so quiet you can hear the camera zooming!

Burger King kicks baby out

Imagine being out in a large group of twenty five, with your mother and six month old baby. You are on your way to a show and stop for a bite to eat at your local Burger King. You are standing in line about to order when the manager tells you that you cannot dine in because the baby you are carrying does not have shoes on. The baby, that does not walk. You explain that the baby does not own shoes, and the manager continues to harass you after your group has ordered and you are sitting there eating. "that lady with that baby with no shoes is still here", an employee says, as the manager tells you he will call the police if you do not leave with your shoeless baby. As a result, your group of 25 hurries to finish so you all can leave.

Yes, Burger King manager of Missouri, the sign says "no shirt, no shoes, no service". The baby wasn't receiving service! It's mother was! How far down the intellectual chain has fast food corporations went, when they have to actually explain to managers that such policies do not apply to babies? It used to be a respectful profession- fast food restaurant manager, with many challenges and rewards. What has happened?

Recent reports says that Burger King has apologized to the mother. They would like her to come back for the "royal treament", including free food. My question is- what about the 25 other people who had to eat in a hurry because they were with this mother, baby, and grandmother? Will they receive free food, too? They were, afterall, forced to dine under duress.

489 Family Friday: July 3rd

It's Family Friday time again! Family Friday is hosted by HomemakerBarbi.com, thank you Danielle!

As we approach the birthday of America this weekend, I have been pondering the idea of teaching our children to appreciate the country they live in. I was not. I had no idea until I was in my late teens and early adulthood that American even interacted with other countries. I was in a bubble. I do not want my kids to grow up like that. I want my children to love their country, and the heritage we have in it. I want them to have an understanding of where our country has went from, and be concerned about where it is headed. I want them not juts to be an American, I want them to be proud of that and never take their freedoms as an American for granted.

I believe in our society that has been lost a great deal. There has been a wave in this generation of selfishness and self centeredness I cannot recollect happening in history. There are people who live in America, and live with all of the freedom she offers, yet, they seem to hate everything it stands for. I will never understand this.

"What is Memorial Day about, mommy?". I was ashamed that I could not truly explain the holiday, Memorial day, except that it was a day to remember fallen soldiers. You would never know that though to look at society as a whole. In general, national holidays are an excuse to have an extra day off of work, and have a cookout or go on a mini vacation. That's so sad! How many people TRULY CELEBRATE national holidays, for the holidays they are?

I'm learning, too, as I go, but this Independence Day, we are going to read the Declaration of Independence. We read the nativity story the night before Christmas, because that it what Christmas IS ABOUT. So from now on, we will read "the story" of America's birthday, on July 4th, with just as much importance as the nativity story on Christmas.

and carry on our quirky tradition of watching Will Smith's movie "Independence Day". We started doing that way before the kids were born, and it just "is". I love this speech:

465 Raising Foodies: Trying new things pt 2

This is part two in the series about children trying new foods. I left you with a video of Jackson trying sushi with raw tuna. Did you like it?

We love going to Whole Foods and eating off their hot bar and salad bar. It is an excellent opportunity for both kids to try out new foods without us being committed to an entire dish and risk wasting food. They have a sushi section with a great variety of kinds to try- vegetarian, cooked fish, raw fish, brown rice or traditional white sticky rice. If you try it and do not like it, they have a 100% satisfaction guarantee on their products, which is GREAT!

So this week, we have Jackson trying a (raw) salmon roll. A recent conversation had been about other people we knew who liked sushi, too. He was impressed that one of our "international" friends was a real sushi lover, which you'll observe in this one. Will he like the salmon? Lets see!

461 Raising Foodies: Trying New Things pt1 (series)

Jackson is my adventurous eater. He will try anything and likes most everything. He draws the line at tofu, and he done that after eating it twice. He prides himself in his adventurous food spirit. So we went to Whole Foods one week to grocery shop. (No, its not as expensive as you think it is, either, trust me!) We had not had lunch so we hit the hot bar there. We love eating at Whole Foods! The hot bar and salad bar is a very good way to introduce your kids to new foods without committing yourself to preparing whole dishes. When Hannah tries new things I get just a small spoonful, enough for a couple of bites. If she likes it and wants more, we'll go get more.

So Jackson is a sushi lover. Sushi is something we'll be making at home in the next couple of weeks if things work well. He always gets a California roll, which contains cooked crab meat. This time, he wanted to try RAW fish. so I agreed. This is how good Whole Foods is: if he did not like it, they have a 100% satisfaction guarantee, and the cashier said he did not like it we would get our money back. That's customer service, my friends!!

So how did he do? Lets see ... we bought a pack with two different kinds of fish. Here is Jackson trying raw tuna:

My nephew graduated last night

My 22 year old nephew graduated from vocational (high) school last night. We're so proud of him, he was so happy last night. Stephen has a "deformed gene" as it was explained when he was little, which caused him to be "handicapped"; so his diploma is ike that of a special needs equivalent to a high school diploma. As you can see from the video he's a happy fella.


Congrats Stephen!!

He also received special recognition during the ceremony for progress, attendance, activities, and the such. We got tickled with him receiving his:

This pic is so special. The boy is the son of dear friends of ours we don't get to see very much anymore. (He was born 12-17 and she was born 12-20.) His older brother of a year is also on the "blue" team, and boy are they good. We've enjoyed getting to see them each week. What's also cute with the pic is Hannah is #6 and he is #7 (and the other one is #8, lol)

This is probably one of the best goals of the season, she done such a good job getting past Jackson (lol)! everyone laughed at his reaction, and I was so happy to find how detailed this pic turned out considering I took it zoomed in 15x from the other side of the field- lengthwise!

This week's Wordless Wednesday was "Skate dude at work".
I explained some about it in my contest entry here. We had such a good time trying to get those pics. I had a hard time choosing which one to enter in the contest, as you can see. I chose the one for the contest for the height he had and his form- not to mention the hints of orange from his hair you could see at the top of his head! But these were equally as awesome and I really think I'm going to create a poster with the second one. I LOVE the angle of the third though, with the blades of grass- just how I planned it! He's getting really good at skating, I believe. I just realized today I had a video already uploaded of him, check him out-



Not all that fancy, but hey, he's an amateur! He's got some good stuff- trust me, there's more skate videos in your future if you're a regular visitor here :o)
